Okay, there was a short post on WoW Insider about Practical Jokes in Alterac Valley

and it reminded me of a classic joke that, if you’ve been playing any length of time, you’ve probably seen already.

In fact, you’ve probably seen it done to someone, and known about it so long you have trouble remembering how anyone ever fell for it.

I am talking, of course, about the incredible [Alt-F4] command, and the MANY ways to which you will see it used.

Let me paint a picture, of an evening earlier last week…

The usual suspects were on Teamspeak, shooting the breeze (Gotta remember; family-friendly).

We were all doing different things, some PvP, some quests, instances, yadda yadda yadda.

Someone logs into Teamspeak… we will withold the name to protect the innocent. Naive? No, innocent. Innocent is a good word. Trusting is another.

And he asks in TS, something along the lines of “Anyone know how to show honorable kills in AV?” (or something close to that… it was a casual comment, so I wasn’t like focused super razor sharp on it at the time…)

And just as fast as the question is asked, Jayboi responds back with “Sure, Alt-F4″.

You would think people would learn not to trust him. You really would.

We all chuckle at Jayboi trotting out the tired old chestnut… and then the person that asked for help went offline…. suddenly. Very abrubtly. Shall we say… suspiciously abrubtly. Almost as though they had typed Alt-F4, which instantly shuts down World of Warcraft, logging you out and booting you to desktop.

Now, you might think that, being nice people with kind hearts, we all were mad at Jay.

Unfortunately, you’d be wrong. Sadly, my character is weak when it comes to practical jokes, especially ones I fell for 2 years ago. I try to compensate by having a good sense of humor when someone nails me to the wall with one.

Yes, that’s right. After we got over our stunned surprise, the laughter began… rolling out like waves… and spread for 10 minutes.

Do I feel sorry for him for getting nailed by Jayboi? Sure.

On the other hand… been there, done that, and what goes around, certainly comes around.

I wonder… are there any other good practical jokes you guys have seen? Aside from getting a lowbie to accept a Duel invitation right before the Ship comes at the dock on Menethil Harbor, and Mind Controlling them off the pier so they miss the boat, of course.

EDIT: I do want to correct an impression I left earlier… Alt-F4 does close World of Warcraft… but it does NOT instantly log your character out, unless you were in an Inn/Major City and resting. If you were out and about, then World of Warcraft closes instantly, but your character remains logged in the normal 20 seconds, remaining in danger the entire time. You’ve been warned.

  1. Well of course, there’s always the classic question (given over the trade channel, usually): “How do I quit my guild?” Hopefully the effects of this question don’t need to be explained. Just picture the confused guildies wondering “Why did Soandso quit? Did we piss her/him off?” and then the subsequent explanation on the part of the unfortunate victim about why she/he quit… followed by a sheepish request to be invited back into the guild. Ah, good times.

  2. This weekend my wife and I were running a long-time WoW friend through Slave Pens- this is a person we used to clear MC with who transfered to our server to play with us, and has actually flown out to visit us twice. Her Pally was 66 for this. We grabbed another friend of ours and some random body for the 5th spot, and proceeded to slaughter the instance without stopping for mana. Being in the same room as 2 group members, we decided to play a joke on her- I’d ask her to bubble pull the next group, then hit stealth while my wife feigned death.

Now you’d think that, after having me rocket pull/charge pull every other group in the instance, she’d ask something simple like, “Why?” which of course would have ruined the prank. But nope, she obligingly bubbled and ran up at them. By that time we were stealthed, feigned, and laughing our asses off. Once everybody else died we tossed her a rebirth and profuse apologies.

Are we awful people for abusing her trust? Absolutely. But man, it was hilarious. This prank can be adopted by druids all across Azeroth, since we can just stealth and avoid aggro when your unsuspecting friend runs in to pull a group of mobs.

  3. There is a spot in MC, behind where Golemagg stood that I remember a Druid telling everyone, “if you look down there, you can see Ragnaros.”

Now, this spot had the appearance of a hole, with lava as a backdrop. But when 5-10 guys new to MC would run right up and pan down to look, their health would tick off 1k at a time. There was no window, it was just a lava spot that killed the average lv 60 in 4-5 ticks. (and Rag doesn’t sit there anyway, for those that don’t know, he spawns as part of an event).

I’ve seen it done 4-5 times, and it always gets at least a few people.

  4. Whenever I encounter a gold beggar in UC I always give them the same answer…

“Here’s something they added in the last patch. Head up to the Scarlet Monastery. If you are quick enough to /salute the guards before they attack you, they will give you 50s.”

I don’t know if anyone ever tried it, but one or two did thank me and run out of town.

  5. Alex - aka Firelight says:

I did exactly that same thing last year in Molten Core!!

Someone asked for a short-cut for somthing (i forgot what) and i replied:

    “Alt-F4 FTW!!”

About 16 of the 40 raid members went offline just as we were on a bio thankfully.

OMG I still laugh about it to old pre-tbc raid friends now!!

  6. A while back I was in Negrand doing some farming when “How do I quit my arena team?” came up in General chat. I immediately recognized the guy asking as this mage that made my old guild’s blacklist for being so annoying he made Gilbert Godfrey look downright pleasant by comparison.

My response “/gquit teamname” resulting in one more moron being guildless…

  7. The /AFK got me in AV once…I was pretty pissed about it..

My favorite used to be the “Noob Portal” that would open right at the BG start..Watch as 5-9 “noobs” get ported to a city..LOL

  8. Agreed with the above post…

my favs are the noob portal… “Hey come click on the soulwell portal” from a mage…

And Yelling “You can report people afk by targeting them and typing /afk report”

  9. Mine was when BC was still new and we were getting Fresh 70’s. I would tell them when they first got thier mount, Fly up really high, Dismount and then remount. 2 Guildies fell for this…..

Oh and last week a friend complained about there being no AH in Shatt. So I told him “You dont go to the one in LC near the Bar. He searched for 15 minutes….;)

  10. One perpetually fun favorite for hunters is to group up with a lowbie, cast Misdirect on the poor, unsuspecting soul and then attack (for instance) a Booty Bay Bruiser or some other neutral guard. Say goodnight, Gracie. M’wahahahaaa

  11. My favorite one is to talk about the awesome new tent animation they made for the /camp command in the trade channel. It’s one of the less well-known ones but I think EQ had that command so some people might figure it out.
