Hi All,

Sorry to have to post this bad news, but since you’ve all supported us during the last weeks as we took care of Molly, we wanted to let you know the outcome.

We took her to another vet last night for a second and more competent opinion. They ran blood work to compare to that of two weeks ago. We got the results about 3 hours ago and it showed that rather than being fatty liver disease, it was a liver obstructive disease. That type of disease is unable to be treated medically or with supportive care and the only option is surgery to find and remove the obstruction. However, to do the surgery, an ultrasound, biopsy and clotting tests would have had to be done as prep work. And the vet didn’t feel from the way Molly responded to the blood draw last night and the high values in the results, that she would likely survive the surgery or the recovery period if she made it through the operating table. The toxin levels in her blood by this morning had put her into a semi-coma state and you could tell just by looking into her eyes, that the Molly we loved, was already gone.

So an hour ago BBB and I took her into the vet and let them euthanize her to end the pain and suffering that she was enduring. We brought her back home and she’s now in a resting place under a huge maple tree in our backyard directly in sight of the patio windows that she used to stand by and look out while “yelling” at the birds and squirrels.

Now the job remains to tell our 4.5 year old son when he gets home in an hour. We lost my grandmother and my father 17 days apart last June, so our family has been through the ringer, so to speak, in the last six months and unfortunately for a little boy, he’s having to learn the hard lesson about death much earlier than we would have wished for him.

It may be awhile before blogging gets back to the normal mix of grumpiness and lightheartedness that you’ve come to know and love from the BBB. But in the meantime, thank you again for all your comments, personal emails, and support. We truly appreciate each and every one!

    Cassie and BBB,

My condolences to both of you. I applaud you for your courage in making what was pretty clearly the right decision. Nonetheless it is hard saying good bye to a member of the family, as most of us consider our pets to be. My best to you and your family.

  3. lifebloomer says:

    BBBs,

I hope you can take comfort in knowing that you’ve made the more difficult but right decision. I’ve been there and it is not easy. My sympathies

Losing a family pet is never easy. We had to let go of our family dog who had been with us for over twelve years a little over a year ago. On my birthday in fact, hardest decision we ever made.

Thoughts and prayers go out to you guys. Hang in there.

  5. Matticus says:

Ouch, sorry to hear that BBB. My sympathies, sir.

  6. Ess says:

    Aw… :(

My thoughts are with all of you.

  7. Kirk says:

    damn.

About 4 hours ago we had to put our cat down (cancer-ridden). I was hoping yours would go the other way so I’d have some balance of joy.

My absolutely sincere sympathy and understanding.

That is so very sad, my heartfelt condolences for you Mrs BBB, and the Mr and esp the little B.

    TriB fam,
I’m truly sorry to hear about your loss. I love animals and I know how much they mean to a family. When I was young, I lost quite a few pets, but my mother always told me that our pet’s love will always be there. Looking down, my pet loves and cares for me even more that their pain is over. If there is anything I can do, let me know. You all will be in my prayers.

    BBB and family,
It’s a very hard, heartbreaking decision to make. You have my sympathies.

    @Kirk
My sympathies to you as well.

  13. Anonymous says:

Very sorry to hear that. Thats a lot of bad news in a very short time. Having gone through similar things myself, I can tell you (and I know it doesn’t really make you feel better right now) that time will heal the wounds.

  14. Kailen says:

    Sorry to hear that. :(

It always hurts to lose a pet, but it’s better now than if she were suffering. I’m sure she had the happiest life with you, and while she will be sorely missed in your family, you still have her memories.

  15. Papewaio (Blackhand) says:

Our family has had to do the same twice in the past. Hated doing it, but at some point you have to do what is best for the animal you love. Very sorry for your loss.

  16. kestrelsaerie says:

My condolences as well. We lost a cat to the same cause several years ago, and it was very difficult–I know what you’re going through.

It’s tough when someone you’ve come to think of as friends or neighbors suffer a loss such as this; just know that we are all thinking of you right now.

@ Kirk, my sympathies to you as well, my friend.

  17. Michael TLH says:

My condolences, but you made the best most humane decision, and I will also applaud your courage to do so.

Best to Little BB, Mama BB and BBB. :)

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. Especially on the heels of the loss of your Grandmother and Father. That’s so hard as you’re still grieving for them. I will be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

It’s times like this I find the concept of the “Rainbow Bridge” comforting, because heaven just wouldn’t be heaven if our special friends weren’t there with us.

    ——————–
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…

I’m truly sorry for your loss. Cats are amazing animals, and a blessing to have for as long as they’re in our lives.

@lypi, that poem ALWAYS makes me cry, as I’m brushing tears from my eyes right now. Every pet owner should get to read that.

My deepest sympathies to all of you.

  28. Amanna says:

Sorry to hear that Cassie and BBB. We’ve lost two cats in the last couple of years – both of which the cats my wife and I had before meeting. They were our “long-term” companions. My wife had her tabby for 18 years, and I had my calico for 10. It is a hard time.

Remember all the good times you had and how they used to jump and play.

  29. Nelthilta says:

  32. ~One Among Many~ says:

BBB, much like everyone else the overwhelming sense of sympathy and sorrow for what you guys are going through is in my mind. My “best friend” Picasso died in his sleep at the age of 19. I was unable to be with him when he passed, but am thankful he did not suffer. We did have to put down our cat Fran when I was maybe 9 years old. I don’t think I really understood then why my mom was crying.

I can’t imagine picking a better place for your kitty – she’ll be in your thoughts and hearts always.

Take your time getting back into the swing of things. Your readers all understand what hardship is and what the loss of a loved one (furry or not) means.

    :)

  33. Anezti says:

    Uff… that’s sad :(

I feel for you all. We had to euthanize our ver old and loyal companion Eddie (Cairn Terrier)about 1.5 years ago. Still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it, even though it was my parents dog and I only lived with him when he was a pup… and I am 36.

Death never gets easier, but you learn to cope with it better, I suppose.

My condoleances to all of you.

  34. Bella says:

srry BBB and Cassie.Whirl told me the unfotunate news. You did the right thing in the end..second opinions are always good..at least Molly didnt suffer much longer than she had too. my heart is broken. =’(

  35. Stobnor says:

My sincere condolences to the three of you.

I’ve never posted a comment before, but the Rainbow Bridge passage just moved me to tears on a busy train in the North of England.

We have 3 cats and my wife is very close to having our first child. I’m dreading the day that the cats pass away, both for how my wife and I will cope but more so what our daughter will go through.

    My thoughts are with you.

  36. Stupid Mage says:

    So sorry for your loss.

Remember her for the good times as she will remember you the same way.

  37. Elory says:

Warm thoughts to all of you!

  38. Vice says:

I’m sorry for your loss, we have been though something similar with our “Fur Kids” a while back. You made one the hardest choices your pet can ask you to make.

There is nothing I can say to make it feel better, however you guys need just need to hang in there. It gets easier as time goes on.

  39. Pablo says:

    /wipe tear

    So sorry for your loss.

    Godspeed Molly

  40. gamedame says:

My sincere sympathies on your loss. I admit to dropping tears here at my desk at work. The Rainbow Bridge poem made me think of the eventual time when I will have to let my two 14-year-old cats go. A line from a movie called “Marvin’s Room” that always helps me feel a little better (paraphrased): “I was so lucky to have had the chance to love them.” Often we think about the love we lost, but really what means more to us is the love we gave.

  41. Gibbiex says:

    /hug

Really sorry for your loss. I’m a ferret owner, and they have very common, very odd diseases. Adrenal cancer and pancreatic cancer are the two biggest. Anyway I’ve gone through maybe a dozen ferrets in the last 10 years, its very heartbreaking, and very expensive in vet bills. They’re worth it though, they’re my kids. Anyway, yeah this sucks.

  42. Melnayo says:

I’d like to add my voice to the rest, though i have nothing new to say.

  43. Cynergy says:

I am sorry for your loss.

  44. Snotpaw says:

Sorry to hear the tough news. :(

God bless you and give you comfort.

    /mourn
    /hug

P.S. I’ve seen plenty of stray cats, and they lead pretty miserable lives for the most part – fighting, starving, and suffering untold injuries and diseases. If nothing else, you guys can be glad that you gave Molly the very best kind of life that a cat can have. Both of my cats were strays when I found them, and when they’re gone, I’ll know that I made their lives warm and happy. <3
