Just because I can, I’m linking to the pre-Kara level 70 healing Priest gear guide that World of Matticus wrote.

Check out his awesome guide here.

I thank you so much, Matticus, for writing that, and for all of the skilled Priest players for adding to it in the comments.

Not only does it show me what to look for in the Auction House ahead of time, but it helps me focus on what to aim for in faction grinding, and in instances I will want to run for drops.

My only problem with it is that you discuss taking two professions, Enchanting and Tailoring. Now, of COURSE I’m taking Tailoring… I had 375 Tailoring on my Druid at one point (until I had all 20 slot bags, anyway), so I’m all about getting the Primal Mooncloth set.

But I have chosen to take Jewelcrafting on my Priest, and actually am already 305 JC, just drooling to get to level 50 for the next and last step.

I was, again, 375 Enchanting on my Druid at one point, before reshuffling my professions (wow, the only proffs I haven’t had maxed on my Druid at one point are Blacksmithing and Leatherworking. How sad is that.)

I just don’t see, personally, how the BOP benefits to Enchanting other than the +20 Healing to a ring would offset the money making opportunities of prospecting your own ores, and having the BOP Trinkets like Figurine: Talasite Owl, Figurine: Living Ruby Serpent, and a couple nice BOP epic gems that would be helpful upgrades.

Of course, I am speaking strictly from the point of view of someone that has Mining maxed out on an alt. I totally agree that nothing is as optimized for use with Tailoring as Enchanting is, if that is your only character in the 60-70 range.

I’m just saying that, for me, I’d rather have two professions on my Priest that provide sweet BOPs, and also can make me some cash and benefit my other characters.

I got SO fed up with not being able to enchant the gear of my alts. THAT is why I dropped Enchanting. After the 30th time I had to find another Enchanter to trick out my Hunter or another alt, I took a step back, said “Screw this“, and dropped it. I’ve never been unhappy with that decision.

Anyone else have any thoughts on JC over Enchanting for Priests? Or something else over both? If synergy is NOT an issue between two professions on one character, and given that Tailoring is a MUST have, which would you prefer? I really want to know, before I go the rest of the way to 375 JC.

EDIT: Oh, and I’m not talking about taking both of those figurine Trinkets over what Matticus recommened. I’m only talking about replacing the Lower City Prayerbook with the Figurine: Talasite Owl. FYI. I loves me the Scarab. can’t wait to heal in Black morass to get it. :)

For my druid tank I have chosen to go for Leatherworking + Enchanting.

The biggest plus of being a Chanter is actually the ability to disenchant stuff. They should rename Enchanting to Disenchanting. Seriously.

On my server Large Prismatic Shard sells for a nice 30g. I can go to Skettis, and instead of trees, I farm Adversarial Blood mobs. Well geared bear tank will kill those guys solo with no problems. If you’re not feeling geared enough, bring a healer.

Those guys (100%) drop nice blues that is quickly exchange into an also very nice sum of 25-30g.

I would drop Enchanting a long time ago if not for the Disenchant option.

And for those that think money is not everything… I spend about 100g-150g on every raid night. That is 4 times a week. Flask of Chromatic Wonder alone costs 50g each. Not to mention those huge repair bills after few wipes.

I think all the BoP crafting items can be useful, but eventually you’ll get an upgrade somewhere between Kara and SSC. Money is something you will need the most when you start serious 25-man raiding.

I’ve got a priest at level 70 and she has mining and jewelcrafting as proffesions. I know the primal mooncloth set is great, but i found a lot of other gear that is great also. I use the whitemend set (as you can use that without tailoring), 2 pvp items and kara drops. But even before kara there is great heroic and BoJ items you can get.

And for jewelcrafting, i love the BoP gems you can craft. Also i just got my talasite owl and i absolutely adore it. Im not really liking the +200 healing on use as i dont find that very usefull for priests healing. But 900 mana back on use and 12 mp5 yes please!

I have both 375 Enchanting and 375 JC on my priest.

If you were just starting out, I’d say go with Enchanting, you can make a lot of gold by disenchanting and you get the sweet +healing and +spell damage BoP enchants to your rings, and you will never be short of mats for your own enchants (= you can keep on enchanting your gear as you upgrade them).

The JC way is very costly, almost all gem cutting designs that drop are BoE and go for about 200-400 or more on the AH, and the uncut rare gems cost almost as much as the cut ones (on my server at least), so there is not much profit margin unless you have a supply of gems from somewhere else (mining alt or so).

The BoP gems you can craft are unique, so the only one you’d be interested in for your healing are the +26(?) healing I guess, and maybe the spell damage and spell crit for the dps gear (can’t remember if there are other BoP gems there are that might be useful to a priest atm). The trinkets, albeit very nice and useful, are not uber good, there are others that might be equally good for you.

But since you already have JC on your priest and didn’t like Enchanting in the first place, then I’d say stay with the JC :-)

I briefly considered dropping one of my professions to skill up tailoring for the Primal Mooncloth set, but the extra healing simply was not worth losing all those designs and formulas she knew.

That post is a tad bit outdated. I should get around to it once in a while. I haven’t taken a complete look at the Jewelcrafting stuff, but I know there are BoP Gems that you can make (similar to enchanting rings).

While it’s not my first choice, it’s certainly a possibility to be explored. I expect an update when you finish =)!

I have a former holy priest with 375 tailoring/ench and a healadin with 375 mining/JC. The key? Two different accounts. There, you know my dirty secret.

I want to make sure you realize that the enchanting is +20 healing PER RING, not just one of them. So you’re looking at +40 healing total.

In JC there are a few gems you can cut, but they are 1 kind per equipped. The best ones there for a holy priest are +26 healing and maybe the +18 stam. There are WoWHead rumors of a +12 spi but it’s not actually in-game yet.

So if you go with ench, you have a +40 healing or if you pick JC, you get +26 healing and +18 stam. For me, healing is the most critical stat for a priest.

Also be aware that every. single. pattern. that you need to get from 350 to 375 JC is a world drop. You cannot buy any of them from a vendor. Even the cheapest ones that no one in their right mind would actually cut to use start at 200g. The good patterns are an easy 500g-700g.

The last 10 or so points of JC require you to cut meta gems (also world drop patterns). I hope you enjoy farming for primals and begging alch’s to transmute diamonds (which have a cooldown). Do Earthstorm if you can, since the primals are much cheaper. :D

I laugh when people claim that JC will make them money. I have yet to see it be more than a money sink and I have all the MH rep patterns. But already having an ench, I wanted to do something different.

Mooncloth tailoring does make good money, though, even if you don’t have any of the good patterns (i.e. whitemend). All you have to do is make mooncloth whenever the timer’s up, turn them into bags, and sell them. That’s pretty much how I funded getting my epic mount (back before dailies were available). They sell for about 450g each. Naturally, do this after you’ve made your own equipment. ;)

Why, hello thar. I’m a fellow druid, currently resto for end game progression, but was previously feral for all Pre-BC (and halfway through T5) content. Interestingly enough, I didn’t run into your blog until today.

Personally, I don’t think dropping chanting is that big of a deal. The only reason it’s ever really “paired” with Tailoring is because you can disenchant all the junk cloth items you make–and hopefully make some money off of it. Anyone who says that you need chanting for the +healing to rings? Eh. You could make the same argument for any DPS class to get the +Spell Damage or +AP to rings as well. I have enchanting maxed on my warrior, of all classes, and while I’ve made some gold off it, it hasn’t been the most helpful. Oh, great! I have Boar’s Speed! Too bad I can’t throw that on my druid’s boots.

A word of warning about Jewelcrafting–it is extremely expensive to level once you hit a certain point. I choose to blame the rarity of such metals as gold/silver/truesilver; I also have an exceedingly difficult time dusting an entire stack of Adamantite (be still my poor heart). I don’t at all regret taking that profession on my paladin, but I also squared with the fact that it costs 200+ gold for the blue BoE gem patterns.

At any rate, I also recommend trying to farm Botanica for the Bangle of Endless Blessings.

I echo your applause, the post from Matticus was first class.

The build generated was possibly a little light on stamina, especially for a fresh priest, but this can be raised now with some of the nice new welfare epics mixed in.

I gained much happiness from Matt’s hard work.

Well, my healer (resto Shaman) has enchanting and has enchanted both rings, and it’s a nice boost.

A more solid recommendation for the practice, however, would be a few comments dropped by one of my server’s most advanced healers.

There is a Holy Priest here on Ysera named Nie. She is well known not only for her Jewelcrafting and her Tailoring (I don’t think there’s any pattern she doesn’t have), but also because her guild has literally beaten the game. They’ve cleared every instance, downed every boss, and there’s nothing left for them to do.

Consequently, she has basically maxed her gear until the next expansion…. and she has mentioned on the forums that she wishes she had the ability to drop that +20 healing enchant on her rings. Even though she currently has over 2400 +healing (and I think she said in one post that it’s around 2800+ with some gear changes and buffs), that last 40 points is bothering her… probably because it’s the last upgrade possible at the end of the game. (I think she actually has epic gems in every slot.) Jewelcrafting has allowed her to craft ONE nice healing gem, but it’s “unique”… a dumb move on Blizzard’s part, if you ask me.

So basically at the end-game level, Jewelcrafting will give you a few extra points of healing from a single gem, and that’s all. (Epic raid-drop trinkets are better than anything you can craft.) Enchanting, on the other hand, will add 20 points of +healing to every ring you acquire (if you choose to blow the mats on every ring – it’s expensive, but also a good way to level Enchanting all the way to the end, too).

Your profession choice won’t make or break your healer, don’t get me wrong. I just remembered Nie when I read your comments, and what she had to say about the exact same choice (Jewelcrafting vs. Enchanting). If I personally had ANY questions about playing a Holy Priest, I would DEFINITELY take her advice on it. :)

(She’s actually a nice person, too! Or at least she’s always been nice to me, lol…)

Lastly, for the time being, I would say keep Jewelcrafting but don’t get too attached to it…. make the trinkets that will help you out for now, and then when you start getting epic healing rings and such, switch to Enchanting to “upgrade” them. Just a suggestion!

Enchanting is a pain to level, so don’t bother with it unless you consider yourself “hard core” or just need something to do to kill time, lol.
