I thought I’d let you in on two sites that have provided me with hours of fun while at work in between moments of excitement.
These are both kind of off the beaten path, they consist mainly of ‘this is a no shitter’ kind of humorous stories, and have very extensive archives for hours of workplace browsing.
And they’re not quite as blatantly bad to read at work as webcomics.
First is probably the more widely-known one. At the UK techie site The Register is the man, the legend, the Bastard Operator From Hell.
The BOFH, as he is known, is an IT professional that has raised tormenting users, his boss, and the computer support helpdesk people to an artform.
I started reading him a long time ago, and he never disappoints me. There are two eras of BOFH, the pre-Register days of Unix Admin destruction and college user access control, and the post-Register work that continues the stories after leaving college and entering the office workplace. LOTS of archives.
If you scroll to the bottom of the BOFH page you’ll find links to previous years’ archives 2000 – 2007, and then there is the website that archives all the work previous to that… I’m talking a LOT of reading here. This will blow a week or two of browsing.
You can thank me for your loss of productivity later.
My next recommendation is The Acts of Gord.
These are simply short stories, in some cases very short, which are the expoits of a video store owner from the heyday of Genesis and Nintendo 64, before Blockbuster or Hollywood Video or EB Games or other large chain rental places, when the ONLY video game rental choice was the privately owned and operated rental shop.
Remember those days?
These stories are just…. I love them. They are BOFH for video game store owners and clerks.
If you have ever worked retail, most especially if you have ever worked retail at any video game store that takes used games in trade for crash or credit, you will love this man, and wish his stories really were true… some of them I can believe, others… well, I WANT to believe.
The sections on the sidebar each contain collections of stories, and they are the awesome.
On top of it, a friend of Gords’ started a webcomic version of some of the exploits of Gord, called Gamers Edge, and took off from there. The archive of comics is good, but nothing to me beats pure Gord.
Thank you, and have a nice work week.
Having read both ages ago, and reread them frequently, I can vouch, for the time wastage. Thanks bear, there went my productivity for the next few days.
Having read your suggestions, I can only hope that you’ve read the Chronicles of George.

It’s funny, but I just read this with the BOFH archives open in another window.
Aaah, this stuff never gets old…
my favorite time waster at work is Gaijin Smash (http://gaijinsmash.net), the true story of a big-black-guy living in Japan…
WOOT!!!!!
omigod omigod omigod…
/happydance…
YEEHAW!!!!!!
I was SUCH a fan of the big black american man teaching in a Japanese school!
I was a fan…. years ago, gota be 3 years now, when he was on a totally different website, and when I lost some computer data, I could NEVER find him again!
Holy shit, He’s been updating for years since I lost the crazy gaijin’s website!
Jesus, he’s married now! To a Japanese woman!
Omigod, I have years of awesomeness to catch up on….
WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gaijin Smash… oh god bless him.
BOFH looks like fun Sunday morning reading. :-) If you’re in the tech industry, I have to recommend the Daily WTF.
http://thedailywtf.com/
Oh man, thank you so much for that Acts of Gord, I had an awesome morning just reading all of them. I liked the non-competitive “no more tetris!” one the best, made me laugh out loud :)
I have forgotten just how funny Gord is.
“The next Chapter of Proclamations should be up in a day or so. So we can only hope… 11/18/01″
Doesn’t sound like Gord updates much….
Too bad, since its hilarious :)
Yeah, he sold the store in ’01, but the site lives on…..
Man, BBB, I’ve been reading BOFH since I read this at like 10am. It’s 11:30 now.
Way to blow my day off. =P
