This isn't my story, but one of my dad's. In his younger years he was used to the shifting mech on a Harley, and thought he could ride any machine in existence. He was visiting one of his friends who got a new Indian Cheif. For anyone that does not know, the shifter on the chief is exactly reversed from that of many other bikes.

He sat down on the bike and revved it a few times, popped his foot engaging the gear unexpectedly. He stood the bike on it's end and held on for dear life. Crossed over the road went down into the ditch and got thrown through a barbed wire fence. Luckily all the damage he received from this (physical, not pride) was two slashes in his jacket across the back and across the belly.

After he got back up on his feet. He lugged that bike back up on the road, climbed on again with determination and took off down the road. When he got back to his friend's the friend noted that he had ridden it pretty hard. The bike had a speedometer on it that showed the highest speed reached, somwhere around 120....

(My appologies if any of what I wrote seems inaccurate, I have not heard my dad tell this story in many years. But you get the general idea.)

Fantastic story! Glad you came out all right. It's like the horror move where the blond 20 year old co-ed almost makes it to safety then blamo!

This may be a bit of necromancy, but I though it particularly appropriate:

Apparently, the Marines have had more fatalities in the past year from motorcycles than Iraq fighting.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/10/30/marine.motorcycles/index.html

Should be some interesting discussion there.

I think every motorcyclist has one of these kinds of stories, but yours is unique .. you had to ride 480 miles to crash. I managed it much quicker than that :)

If you don't know, approx. 70 percent of a motorcycle's stopping power comes from the front brake. Most of the time you can safely ignore the rear brake unless you are doing an emergency quick stop.

I'm 51 years old and have been riding for more than 30 years and 250,000 miles. That's to the moon.

I love my bike - a 2001 Triumph Speed Triple. We've been up, down and sideways, in sun hot enough to make the levers burn through gloves, in rain so hard I had a bow-wave, in Snow, Sleet, Fog and I've been scared spitless a number of times. And we'll be together until one of us dies.

God, I don't know how you did it. I drove 200 miles in england in the rain, 100 in I could no longer feel all the way up my arms or my legs. I convinced myself I was 5 mins from home. Using the controls was a little dangerous too, I lost all my co-ordination to the cold. It was like trying to write using only the palms of my hands.

My college motorcycle in the rain adventure was more tame. I had a Honda 350 and had to get back to school on a Sunday afternoon for Monday morning classes. It was only a light rain, but that 350 was underpowered for the freeway. I only had about a 100 miles to go so most of the way, I just got behind a semi and drafted. Less rain and faster and I figured I could stop faster than the semi if I had to. The lesson I learned was that you have to put your coat on backwards to keep dry. It took me a long time to figure it out though.

BBB, That story reminds me of some of my more recent motorcycle trips and some past 3-4 day passes. Trips that went to far in to short of time in vehicles that had had to hard of a life.
