Cassie mentioned it briefly before removing the post, but she upgraded the site from WordPress 2.3. something ancient to WordPress 2.7 today.

And as many, many things were no longer compatible, she had to upgrade our theme code, and background things were lost or deleted, she had to restore from database backups a few times…

She’s been very frazzled.

There are of course a world of new features, many of whom you can’t see, some you can. New avatar support (I turned on autogenerate random gravitars if you don’t have a custome one setup yet – some of you have them and *I* don’t even have one yet, I had no idea they existed before), the ability to minimize or maximise posts displayed on the front page….

We have no idea what else to expect, but so far we’re dazzled. And dazed. New options? What the heck am I supposed to do with new options?

We;re both sorry for the confusion, and I think everything is good now, all shiny and new. But if you do find a problem, please let us know.

Ahhh… a brave new world!

Hey… cassie figured out how to get me an avatar! It’s tied to my email address!

Yeah, I know. Bear, meet 2004, and Gravitar. Whatever. I’m still excited.

Seems to be doing ok now… although weren’t you an avatar already? Or is that just in flight form?

Happy belated new years (dang, we’re almost halfway through Jan already)

Got my Gravatar sorted today. btw Gravitar is a game from Atari, Google told me that when trying to find how to get one!

Hmm. Let’s see what random thing this gives me. Oh, software upgrades are usually a nightmare. I hear blog engines are particularly bad.

    Hooray for new BBBB!
    Hopefully it won’t cause headaches.

I’ve done the very same thing to one of my old blogs! WordPress seems especially vulnerable to it if you use a hoster provided upgrade script.

Usually what happens is that a base theme is updates to look how you want, but the name remains the same. When you go to upgrade, it overwrites the included theme, along with all the changes you made. The best way to avoid this is to copy the Mandigo theme and rename the folder it’s contained in to something else – then modify it to your own purpose. Once that is done, the upgrade script won’t overwrite your changes.

Plug-ins are another story. They are awesome when they work, but tend to break soon as you upgrade WordPress. Ahh, the joys of maintaining web software :P

One plugin that has worked flawlessly for me since about 2.3. or 2.4 is WordPress Automatic Upgrade. As long as you follow the directions step-by-step, you can’t go wrong–since the first two steps are to back up your WP database and your current WP installation. Flawless upgrade, and you aren’t relying on a hosting service to stay current. (Remember, one of the MAIN reasons to upgrade WordPress, or any other software that interacts with the world, is security.)
