Omigod, a post somewhat related to Druiding!
Achievements.
I’ll never pretend to care all that much about them myself, unless I think they’re cute. Like the ones that give you neat pets like my beloved Skunk, or extra mounts, or fun titles.
That having been said, I DO heartily approve of anything that provides you a reward you actually value. And I don’t mean 10 “Achievement Points”.
The Achievement for obtaining 100 mounts is certainly one of those that has a reward folks value, yes?
Time to get down to brass tacks.
I’ve known for a while that some of my guildies were interested in pursuing the mount collection thingie.
So last weekend, we organized a retro raid to go into AQ40.
As I’m sure most of you are well aware, there are 4 mounts that drop off of the trash in AQ40 (and only in AQ40), three of them have a high drop rate (the red has a much lower drop rate than the others), and they all look pretty cool. They can only be used while IN AQ40 or AQ20, but they do count towards the Achievement.
That being said, since they only require time and the ability to kill AQ40 trash, they are the cheapest mounts I know of in the game.
As I said, we went into AQ40 last weekend.
We cleared everything in our path for quite a ways, no problems at all… but on the Twin Emperors, we wiped the first two shots while we figured out what they actually DO (and what they look like while they’re doing it), and then they bugged. They vanished while we rezzed, and never returned. And the door to continue didn’t open either.
Phooey.
Ah well, shucks golly gosh darn, we had a lot of fun.
But that’s not the point.
The point is, there is a single patrol of one critter, a 4 pull bound together, two more single pull patrols and another 4 pull right before the first boss.
Killing that trash alone netted our run three mounts last weekend.
Now THAT is a drop rate that has to make your ears perk up, amiright?
I wasn’t in the mood to do another full AQ40 tonight, but I was curious to see how smoothly you could down the trash with a small force. After all, it’s the trash that gives the goodies.
As our wise guildie Ruune mentioned in our forums, it’s the trash you want, and you can farm that all week long. Reset, schmeset.
I went to AQ40, and I asked for anyone interested in beating it up with me to come along. Just the entrance trash. No biggie. 15 minutes, tops.
Caladorn’s level 64 Warlock, and Essahn an 80 Enhancement Shaman decided to come along for the ride.
I fully buffed up first, Elixirs, food, Scroll.
We went in, I pulled the 4 pull first… and we grabbed the patrol too, lol.
At the end of the five of them, with me tanking ‘em all, Essahn healing and going OOM a lot, and Cal’s Warlock Meerenie blasting away, we took them down with no problems.
The 4 pulls are interesting, in that every time one of them dies, it adds a buff to the ones that are left. So the remaining trash actually gets a bit tougher as you go.
Not that it helped them any.
Now, I know serious mount farmers will pull the solo patrol first, clear it, and then pull the 4 bound mobs back to the instance entrance, kill three, loot them, and then run out of the instance entrance. When you leave, the 4 pull resets, the three dead trash respawn instantly, and you can go right back in and pull/kill 3, loot, run out, reset ad infinitum.
I wasn’t into that either. It wasn’t a simple smash and grab, a scouting raid to probe defenses.
I just wanted to see how we could do on the trash, and confirm what the drop rate looked like.
We pulled all the trash prior to the boss, cleared it all, and ended up with… well, I’ll let you see for yourself.
Not too tacky, eh?
So, down to the facts.
From how we did on the pulls, I firmly believe that a single level 80 tank, ad a single 80 dedicated healer could clear the trash by themselves, and do it smoothly.
I think two Druids, one Boomkin and one Bear, could probably smoke it wit no issues at all. The Boomkin can throw down some heals and still do solid DPS, with a self Innervate that will be available often as the fights are fairly long. The trash is weak to an 80 tank, but has a ton of health. It’s a long beatdown.
Of course, a Death Knight tank and a Shaman healer would be fun, too. :)
If you take your hits, use your Survival Instincts and Frenzied Regen early, and let the healer conserve their mana for dealing damage, then you should have your SI available later on in the same big fight. It beats having a healer OOM early on.
I’m thinking that a feral Druid might be able to solo the trash… but I haven’t tested the theory. They have a LOT of health.
I might just do that, though.
Good luck on farming some mounts. If a red one drops for you, let me know!
Okay, an update.
I got a guildie to join group with me so I could form a raid, and then went in to solo the trash.
I pulled the wandering solo pat first; no Elixirs, btw, and no problem at all.
I then pulled the 4 Sentinals, and fought them near the instance entrance.
They did not cause me any issues, except for one thing; one of the possible buffs one of them can have is a self heal. You need to watch for that guy, and NOT kill him. You’ll have a hard time burning him down, especially with three others that are NOT healing themselves to choose from.
I started on the self heal idiot, realized what was going on, switched to another one, and proceeded to burn the other three on the pull down. I looted, ran out, came back in and they were rest.
So my fellow druid tanks… go farm some mounts!
Okay, and after having farmed solo for a bit, and getting MY mounts, some guildies decided to come in and join me for a bit. I admit, it’s neat to run around on these mounts.

I’ve been farming Anzu for a little over a month now with no luck. My wife brings her Spirit Beast and the two of us roll through to Big Bird no problem. Two weeks ago, our guild leader sets up a Monday night Mount run. Phoenix, Tiger, Raptor, and Anzu.
I work nights, so I knew I wasn’t going to be part of the run. We did our run in the morning as normal. I think a total of 4 Druids lead 4 groups into the Hall and wouldn’t you know it….one of the groups got the mount drop.
So here I am, farming away every day. Meanwhile one of my guildies got it the very first time he had ever done the fight. The RNG is a cruel mistress. (no luck for anyone with the other mounts, and there has not been a mount run night since.)
/cast envy
Glad to hear that it is not too hard to farm these for the right mix of people. I am still 44 some mounts away from my 100 mount acheivement so will definitely have to go and get me some.
I love mounts.
What is AQ40.?
Looks like another addition to my “list of things to do when my Shaman hits 80″.
I can solo the trash in AQ40, but I can’t handle the first boss. His earthshock spam is too much, even if I load up on stamina (50K health). With a group, his mind control ends things pretty fast – we’ve never gotten past him with less than 10 people.
For farming mounts, however, the first few groups are excellent. I have 3/4 now – the red one remains elusive. I actually wonder if it only drops on the later trash, because I’ve seen it 3 or 4 times, but only near the end. The Twins are definitely the sticking point, once you get around there – it took 15 for us to drop them, last time we tried.
heading for AQ40 today.
@scaresome – AQ 40 is a pre-BC 40-man raid (as opposed to AQ-20, a 20 man raid) at the southern end of Silithus.
I love the bugs…they look awesome. Unfortunately, while in AQ 40, you’re better off not riding them, as they’ll tunnel as soon as you get in combat. And since you can get into combat just from being in the instance, it’s far more efficient to look at your pretty bug mount, ooh and aw, then put it away and get on your horse or kodo.
I try to do AQ every week, after both rep and the Genesis Raiment, and in our last run we had THREE red mounts drop. I rolled a 100 on the first one and got it :)
I got lucky later on C’Thun and won the tentacle, but uh…that’s kind of unrelated ;P
I have 2 of the Bugs. Amusingly enough, Blizzard originally said that these mounts wouldn’t count towards the Achievement – I’m glad they changed their minds (I have 67 mounts and need more!).
@Tasharna: I have heard of some being able to solo the 1st boss, but it’s VERY luck dependent. Has something to do with the “real” vs “fake” Prophet being in a certain location so you can kill the “real” Prophet without aggroing the “fake” copies. Me, I haven’t even tried. :)
Twin Emps tends to bug allot, especially with newer abilities. You especially need to avoid a hunter’s misdirect, as it will almost always cause the encounter to bug and break the instance.
That said, C’thun is definitely worth seeing and can still drop epic loot: The Vanquished Tentacle of C’Thun trinket.
Nice did a bit of aq40 stuff myself but generally I got bored with the place. Too big. Got a red mounty too – whoopededoo :) Tbh, random mount drops never really did appeal to me, though occassionally I’ll go back to sethekk. However, I’m pretty excited to have a plagued & a blake proto drake just around the corner. Worth giving up flight form for those babies, I’d say.
Congrats on the mounts! I’ve never seen those mounts before.
I’ve been missing my Ally toons so created another space goat mage & a gnome warlock. I saw Mereenie in-game earlier this week. :-)
Yup, myself and my friend had the same idea a whle back :) I am an 80 feral druid, she is an 80 holy priest. We downed everything up to the first boss a couple of times (the 4 groups respawn after a while if you wait) and we had no problems at all. We both got the yellow and blue mounts and we also got 1 red. We then had 2 further yellow mounts drop while we were trying to get another red. So the spawn rate is very high indeed.
Like you say tho, watch out for that self healer in the 4 pack, we had to run out when we got him. But good thing is each time you pull them their buffs are different, so we just ran back in and pulled them again until there was no self healer :D
/sigh….me thinks that the druid tanks are frustrated and bored. I missed the memo that said we should bury our head in the sand about the nerfs coming. Guess we’ll just play our alts, go solo old content, or watch crappy movies. I love my bear, i want to rant, but alas, i’ll go lvl my hunter as blizz intended.
I sure will go and clear all those early raids some day, if I’m still playing by then … I don’t bother too much about the mounts atm since it’s quite some gold to buy all that needs buying and I’m not into farming at all, but I sure want to see all those places (almost had explorer before the achievement existed).
@Breelie: I don’t know what the hardcore players say about the changes to bears but it sure haven’t stopped my guild from having me tanking Ulduar 10, and I’m not even a proper experienced tank (never went feral until march this year).
I see doing old content as something to enjoy between the raids instead of just trying to get ridicuolus amounts of gold to get the mammoth and the chopper.
