Last night MMO Champion alerted us to the fact that Blizzard has made Paid Faction Changes live.
The process seems to be pretty doggone bulletproof. You get to change your race, appearance and even your character name all as part of the service, Reputation gets transferred to the appropriate opposing faction rep (Alert! Wintersaber Trainers on Alliance HAVE NO OPPOSITE and will be LOST!) and even items like PvP gear will get the closest equivalent taken care of.
A Blizzard comment states that no items will be lost in the process.
Something I found interesting while perusing this process, is another service Blizzard will provide that I had absolutely no idea was coming out.
A brand new World of Warcraft magazine!
I had no idea this was coming, personally. A years’ subscription is 4 issues, and for the US costs $39.95.
That sounds fascinating! And expensive!
I mean, $10 an issue?
You can tell I’m addicted by the fact that I’m actually thinking about it… I did have subscriptions to EGM, Offical PS Mag, PC Gamer and Game Informer before WoW erased the need.
What do you think? Do you think the magazine will have stuff that you can’t live without?
Hey, I say, give me a code in each magazine for a neat in game mini-pet, and I’m there, baby!
Otherwise, I think it would be a hard sell at Casa de Bear.

I read about the WOW magazine in wow.com’s coverage of Blizzcon. Apparently it doesn’t have an codes or additinal bonuses but is a very high quality publication. I.E for collectors and such.
I want to know what is in each issue that you can’t find in the on-line blog world. Hey now that is free. I always love having a magazine to read during breaks but I don’t think this one fits into the budget. They only way your going to know if the magazine is something good is to get a subscription. IF it isn’t anything good ohh well. Your only out some cash and you have something that haha may be a collectors item.
You know there’ll be codes in the magazine for minipets and stuff :)
It is a high cost, but from what I’ve read, each issue will be 168 pages long and advertisement free. You honestly can probably find all of the information in the magazine on the internet, and even if you can’t, as soon as the magazine hits the stands there will be plenty of places online where people post the information from the magazine. Still, I’ll probably end up getting it to add to my collection of Warcraft related books and comics. It’s been a long time since I got a video game magazine. Aww, Nintendo Power.

You don’t have to worry about losing Wintersaber rep, one of the F.A.Q.’s says that while you’ll lose the rep for transferring, you’ll get it back if you decide to go back to the Alliance from the Horde.

I would buy it for pets/mounts/special items, thats the only thing they could hook me up with – who reads paper-magazins these days anyways? Newspaper yes (on my way to work), books maybe, but magazines? Old information = no information -> nothing worth.
I’m excited about the faction changes! The possibilities are endless…. well as endless as my wallet can go.

They had the magazine people at Blizzcon (if you signed up there, you got a sweet little stuffed baby green Murloc called “Gwurky”). The magazine is a “coffee table” magazine, meaning that there will not be a single ad in it. It’s going to be ~ 148 pages long and focus exclusively on WoW stuff. It’s supposed to be high quality, with thick glossy pages and awesome artwork. There’s going to be sections on the various play aspects (raiding, PvP), lore, UIs, and player interests.
I had no problems subscribing since Viz media dropped Shojo Beat magazine (curse you Viz!) and that cost about as much as this. First issue is due out around November — if you haven’t subscribed, I’ll let you know how it is. I’m pretty amped b/c the first issue’s going to have a bit on non-combat pets.
It’ll be out of date by the time its published. I still subscribe to one old PC magazine (PC Format) for hardware reviews and a few other bits. I got one a few days after Blizzcon and there wasn’t even a mention. Because by the time its edited, printed and distributed its a couple of weeks out of date. In a community used to blogs and fast moving news sites, they won’t find a lot of fans. The only way this could work is if news, guides and all those other things aren’t a part of it. So that leaves you with comics/fiction, interviews and not a lot else. You’d be better off saving up for an iphone to get your wow news on the move :). Strictly for collectors only I guess.

The magazine is way too much geekitude even for me and I’m not sure I can really justify $40/year for it. I’ll stick to blogs.
I wasn’t expecting faction transfers so early!

I’m considering it, but I don’t think my wife would support it. :) I still get PC Gamer, and actually get new and useful information. I doubt there would be any truly useful information in the WoW Mag, though.
It for reading while pooping. The Blizzcast does not make me hopeful for a Blizzard based media project.
I’m wondering about these faction changes … on my server Alliance is pretty weak compared to Horde, AND it’s a PvP server. I can see all the frustrated, halfway decent Allies transferring to Horde and just making the situation that much worse.
Correction Bear, there is a Winterspring equivalent. The Razzashi Raptor.
Eluniar, I know what you’re saying. That, aside from any specifics concerning the Faction Change equivalents, that Horde side can perform a faction rep grind for the Razzashi Raptor, which is Horde only, much as the Winterspring faction is available to Alliance only.
What I’m saying is that if you currently are Alliance and have been working on your Winterspring rep for the mount, that Blizzard has specifically said that the faction will not convert over.
Now, I have no idea if any MOUNT you’ve received will translate to a raptor. That would be covered under pets and items, and there WAS a list of pets per faction, and how they convert. I’ll be darn curious to see how exactly that will work.
Not that I would ever do this. Oh, no. Oh, not me.
“Not that I would ever do this. Oh, no. Oh, not me.”
Come to the Tauren side, Together we can rid the world of the jerk that is Varian (right after we kill Garrosh) :D
They have said the magazine is intended ot be lile a coffee table type deal. So high quality paper, artwork, lore that sort of thing. I’m waiting to see the first issue before I make a decision on it.
Aye, been contemplating myself on whether to do this. But I decided agaisnt it for a couple of reasons, One I like being a Night Elf and wo Im currently working on Loremaster (600/700 Kalimdor and them I am done!!!) and I have no idea how that would translate over. Horde be damned if I have to revist all those old zones again (really makes you appredciate how vital Cataclsyn revamp is). Also guildies and friends ofc :)
Winterspring Frostsaber will trade for the new Ravasaur mount and the other way around holds true as well. However, if you are Alliance and switch to Horde you will no longer be exalted with the trainers faction so that will be one less faction you have with exalted in case you are going for an achievement.

It says it’s a quarterly publication, so really you only get 4 issues?
Magazine is a no-go for me but the faction change sounds very appealing. I will use it for my Draenei Priest who I’m now pretty bored with. I think a chance of face (and faction) would do me good and help reinvigorate me.

As Jacemora has pointed out, if you’ve already gotten a wintersaber, you’ll find yourself on the brand new primo Venomhide Ravasaur without having to do a month of dailies.
But I’d point out that even loosing a faction at exalted for the achievement isn’t -so- bad because while you won’t just be given Tranquillen rep, it’s in the belf 10-20 zone and is suitably easy, if mindless to grind. Just takes the ability to kill level 10s fast. Not too bad at 80. ;)
