Hi BBB,
This post really brought back memories. My Dad has been driving an 18 wheeler for 30+ years. Growing up, my sister and I would beg to hear stories about the crazy things that happened to him out on the road. I'll be sure to send this to him, as I think he'll really get a kick out of it. Thank you so much for sharing!

Great story! I live in the NY Metro area, in my opinion it is the greatest city in the world and, in part, because of the way the cops are. You didn't do anything wrong, the Cop knew you didn't do anything wrong, so no reason to slow you down with a bunch of crap. People need to get moving in the city and the best way is to let the idiot learn his lesson the hard way. I guarantee that BMW driver will think twice before cutting off a trucker again. There is a fast fast pace to the city and once your used to it, it is tough to live anywhere else. I grew up in Utah and, when i return to visit, people drive me crazy with how slow they are. In New York, if its open, you go. Just don't be stupid, if you are, no one is there to save you.

The cop was faced with a traffic snarl of heroic proportions, or just punishment for one dumbass. I think he made the right choice. You got yelled at when you stopped afterward because then you were going to be blocking MORE traffic and making it worse. From what I've read, NYC emergency services have near unlimited authority in the city. Fire trucks doing 70 down a one-way street in the wrong direction, ambulances shoving cars out of their way, etc.

@tsudrats i don't think "road trains" are legal here in the states.. there's just too much that can go wrong, and murphy is quite ready to apply his law at a moment's notice. most i've seen is double tandem (3 short/half trailers behind the cab)

@BBB i believe your story 100%... and IMO the beamer got what he deserved. people need to learn that trucks have right of weight.. (even if they don't have right of way) if you were a bit faster with the grab, you might have scored a gun instead of losing a knife, but hey.. you still have all your parts intact so it's still a win..

Regarding the J-hook - I actually saw the exact same stupid move (on the part of the BMW) when I was in high school riding a bus home. Thankfully it was in Pittsburgh, not in NYC. It was interesting when the police showed up to hear the driver of the car lie about what the bus did, though the cop figured it out pretty quickly. Amazing what having half a dozen witnesses will do. :)

Anyway, I loved the story, and am glad to hear you got out of NYC in one piece. I do have an image of you driving your truck, leaving a wake of devastation through NYC now ... something to make me smile through the weekend. Thanks as always for sharing!
