Nope, NaNo doesn’t claim ownership of anything, they don’t even make you cut and paste the actual novel into the wordcount validator (you can make a document with the word ‘word’ with the same wordcount and use that instead). They just love to cheer on those folks who’s book that started in NaNo makes it all the way. (Water for Elephants was a NaNo book! :D)

I do NaNo every year, although I don’t always win and I certainly don’t end up with a ‘book’ every time, and it’s a heck of a lot of fun. There are no real rules for NaNo so you can do it without interacting with the rest of the community if you’d rather play it safe. :)

Although you’d miss the Traveling Shovel of Death, the Charge of the Knight of NaNo, and other silliness of the forums. (woe!)

I write constantly, but decided, knowing myself, I needed an artificial deadline. But something you said kind of scared me, and maybe I should read the fine print, but in no way did I think NaNo would “own” anything I did or take credit! Eek! Is this a “thing” I should be aware of? As far as I know, my writing belongs to me. I have a good professional friend who did it two years in a row, and is taking this year off. He got one published and I think did a moderate amount of success. My inner discipline is fairly weak, so let’s hope someone else’s cheering section gets me focused!

I have no grand plans for a novel at this time, but I am just happy to be back to writing. :)
