Patch 3.3 Starter Bear Gear lists (Armor)

The purpose of this gear list is to help those folks that are working to be the best they can be prior to raiding.

From the start of crafted Blues to being ready for Icecrown, this is the list for you.

There are certain realities, this deep into the game.

If you’ve got a level 80 Druid, there is a ton of content available at level 80. If your Druid just hit 80 recently, then most raiding opportunities in the earlier 80 realms are past. The group you’re going to run with is either already all geared up and you need to catch up, or the rest of your friends are just getting started in the casual chase, and you’ll get plenty of chances to run Heroics before needing to be raid ready anyway. Either way, chances are good you’re not going to be gearing up by running weekly raids in Naxxramus, Obsidian Sanctum or Eye of Eternity. Even Ulduar and ToC might be relegated to trips down memory lane before too long.

This list serves as a guide for how I rank the items you can acquire from professions, world drops, quests, regular instances, Heroic instances, emblems of all kinds (including Frost), Argent Tournament Crusader Seals and PvP.

No raids are included, not even the commonly pugged ones. I rarely if ever am asked to provide a Raiding Bear’s list of upgrades. What people ask for from me is a helpful starting ground for when they want to get cracking as a new Bear, and don’t really know where to look first.

Whether you prefer more Stamina rather than Agility, or vice versa, more Hit Rating, more Expertise, more Crit Rating, etc is really dependant on your current gear overall. There is no gear list that can replace your judgment. What this list can do is help point out where some great upgrades in general can be found when you’re first starting out.

This first list covers armor. Every item on this list has an Armor Value that is affected by the Bear Form Multiplier. Thus, higher Armor Value matters a great deal for these items.

A few notes on how the gear purchases work.

Emblems of Frost can be used, much like Triumph, to purchase both non-Tier items and items that are part of Tier 10 sets. You will find that the Tier 10 items you can purchase are actually weaker than the ones you can purchase for the exact same amount of Emblems of Frost that aren’t part of any set. One example of this is the Shadow Seeker’s Tunic versus the Lasherweave Raiment.

The reason for this is, the Shadow Seeker’s Tunic is non-upgradeable. It is a fantastic chest piece, but it is a use of 95 Emblems of Frost that, once spent, are what they are. The Lasherweave Raiment, which you purchase from the Druid armor vendor from within the Icecrown Citadel Raid Instance itself, is also 95 Emblems of Frost… but you must purchase it in order to get the higher level Tier 10 upgrades later on. To get a higher Tier 10 item, you MUST exchange the Tier 10 you bought with Emblems of Frost, along with a token from a drop.

In effect, you can consider the Emblem of Frost Tier 10 armor items to represent an investment towards the future. If you will be raiding, and expect to get Token drops, then the Tier 10 items, and their set bonuses, are the better long term purchase. If you are a casual player and may never see a token drop, let alone win the roll for it, the stand alone non-set item represents a beautiful “best in slot”.

Let your own judgment and expectations be your guide.

While perusing the lists, keep in mind the following;

  • Hit Rating Cap for Bears: 262.3
  • Expertise Rating Cap for Bears: 443

(Hit Rating and Expertise Caps are not provided as “much reach” goals, but instead are guidelines to help you know when you have enough of each value, and when stacking more on is a waste of stat point aloocations)

  • Total Dodge is reduced in Icecrown Citadel Raids by 20% from the Chill of the Throne. This does not affect Heroics. Please keep in mind, do not gear or gem specifically for Dodge, or specifically for Health to compensate for this, but use a balanced mix of the two.

  1. Love your site. It has really helped me get a decent idea as a bear-takehitstotheface kind of taking. The breakdown on gear(starting off) and the different enchants and what not was very helpful. Thank-you very much for spreading the knowledge to little bear nublets like myself. ^^

  2. Hm @ BBB

Am i the only one that doesnt see The following items: Neck, Weapon, rings & trinkets??

    Can u give a list of some ? 😀

    Thx in Advance

  3. I was wondering with the new changes to Season 8 whether there are new pvp pieces that might get an honorable mention here. No one else has written about these, but it looks like some or all of the Relentless gear will be avaiable just from honor and that could give a new (or old but non ICC raiding) bear a real leg up. I also noticed that there were some new WG shoulders, neck and bracers being talked about but havent seen them yet. Would love to know what you think as I have used your guide to optimize what I can but the very slow Emblem of Frost grind (as a non-ICC Raider) is slowly killing me!

  4. Yeah, and if those people were to visit the website and look at the sidebar, where these posts are kept as permanent stickies… they’d see the rest of the gear list. Along with other helpful posts.

  5. Great list and thanks for the effort!

But, quite a few are asking about the trinket/rings/weapon slots too. And I’m kinda wondering the same. Any list with the other slots as well?

  6. BBB, I kiss your hairy cheek in thanks for this wonderful list. My main is a mage, but I’ve been grinding EoF to buy Primordial Saronite on my Drood and have got back into the furry fella. This list is the only one I’ve found that’s updated for 3.3, and it’s a godsend. In only a week or so I have fully geared the droofus up with triumph gear, and am now thinking of taking him to TOC10 for giggles.

Keep up the good work mate, I’ve been a keen reader for a while, and will certainly remain so in the future, especially if you keep producing gems like this post.

One thing I’ve noticed, is that as I replace my conquest gear with triumph gear, a swift regemming of the old conquest gear and tadaa! I’ve got a set of feral DPS gear. Worth thinking about, especially if you go for the original wotlk gems rather than the sexy new ones.

  7. @ Irondaddy
I chose feral/feral (tank main spec) and have a separate kitty set (gear swap using outfitter). I have found throughout leveling and gear upgrades at max level that a number of items fit both specs.
I upgrade tanking gear first, and often find that the tank gear, with stam gems & tank chants is often better than the un-upgraded specific kitty gear; eg T10 tanking gloves (agil chant and agil socket bonus) sit nicely in kitty spec.
I find I’m competitive with similarly geared moonkins, depending on the fight, but don’t have to get in a completely different mind-set to swap roles (perhaps I’m just lazy)

  8. Dude seriously, u rawk! This list + the miscellaneous gear list helped me so much with picking up tanking on my druid (which used to be balance specced/geared).

    Keep it up!

  9. Thanks again, you are so helpful. My druid is only a level 60, but I have suffered so much in choosing gear out of ignorance, which caused a lot of wasted gold, darnit. It’s great to have a list ahead of time to avoid costly boo-boos. Especially when marks of honor are so precious to me. It also shows me the pattern to look for in current gear as well. You are the best bear big brother, ever.

  10. As a frequent reader I thought I should weigh in on this truly fantastic list. I would love to see your explanation of agility (mitigation and dps) vs health and armor. Also how good is strg to a bear? Lastly, just a general question for my fellow bears and that is – to full on kitty dps or moonkin??

  11. This list is incredibly useful. Excellent work.

What I take from the output of rawr is that the polar vest has better survival points but worse mitigation points which makes sense given its stats. However as a bear with 32-34K health the extra 2k health looks better to people, but really I want to save up the frost emblems and get that sweet like candy 95 frost badge chest which is basically a combination of these 2 chests without blowing any money upgrading the choking chest with a epic gem and stats enchant

Every item on this list has an Armor Value that is affected by the Bear Form Multiplier. Thus, higher Armor Value matters a great deal for these items

  12. I have just recently started tanking with my druid, this list has been extreemly useful, I appreciate the time and effort it took to make it and I thank you very much.

I do have many of the same questions as some of the people above
    1. Which weapons should I be looking for
    2. Where should we spend our first frost badges?
    3. Trinkets.. which ones are best
    4. Which professions should i focus on

Thank you again for your time and effort in this guide, i hope it grows

  13. Hey, nice list 🙂

Please could you recommend some weapons along side it? I’m currently using ToC’s Marrowstrike, which is a bit pooey. Also which Idol is better? The EoF one doesn’t seem much cop, and though I don’t have any numbers the EoT one looks better.

And where can we find good rings and trinkets?

The weapons, rings, and trinkets seem to be the hardest to find, and when you do find them it can be hard to tell which is better. Hitting the T9 vendor and getting full feral set is pretty obvious to be fair. Could you perhaps add a section of the others please? 🙂

    Thanks alot,
    Ohshift, Aszune EU

  14. Awesome list and post and is very usefull…
But a few things im curiouos about. Perhaps just a few things you may have overlooked.
What about the ‘RELENTLESS” Boots and Belt, ect.
These are also easily obtainable and VERY usefull too. Im working for the 69,000+ Honor needed to buy the belt now. *sigh & groan*

Also Tanking weapons play a HUGE part in this.
As witht he new patch brings one of the best bearr tanking weapons, from the Batterd hilt quest reward. The Lightspire.

I just got the Choking Hauberk to drop for me last night BUT will now be upgrading to the Furious Gladiators chest as soon as i can, as with gemming i can make it better becuase of the 2 slots.

Great guild and yeah, Slot in the Onyxia 232 Helms too, like the guy a few posts above me suggests.

  15. So I dl’ed rawr and used it to evaluate my gear. What I take from the output of rawr is that the polar vest has better survival points but worse mitigation points which makes sense given its stats. However as a bear with 32-34K health the extra 2k health looks better to people, but really I want to save up the frost emblems and get that sweet like candy 95 frost badge chest which is basically a combination of these 2 chests without blowing any money upgrading the choking chest with a epic gem and stats enchant.

  16. BBB, Apparently, I was inflicted with The Dumb the day I posted the above while failing a reading Comprehension check.

Dave, I’m usually Kitty (as evidenced in my gear, though I am dual spec Feral), but have been tanking a lot lately for the faster queue times. Others may be able to elaborate, as I’m shooting from the hip here, but below are answers to some of your questions from my experiences while tanking as a bear.

ToC5 reg: 26k HP with a competent healer.
Heroics: 28k or so is fine.
HToC5: 30k, though I’d shoot for 32k for safety. (If you’re on the low end, you’ll get the warrior / rogue combo every time, I swear.)

A good (and often cheap) weapon enchant is Mongoose. Gotta love that extra Agility.

There are a few decent rep items, but they’re somewhat matched or outdated by a lot of what drops in ToC5 and H ToC5. While it’s more suited for Kitty (ArP), I used a lot of it for tanking for quite some time with no issues. Bear gems and enchants help with that.

Major Glyphs: Maul (vital, important, do not pass Go without it), I’m also using Survival Instincts and Frenzied Regen, since I normally pug and like to have “oh carp!” buttons.

Minor Glyphs: Thorns, Challenging Roar, Unburdened Rebirth (for when you’re feeling cocky and want to show off, rezzing the healer while still tanking).

You are right that the 18 Stam leather kits are very nice for quick fix enchants or temporary gear. An extra 180 health is nothing to sneeze at. I used to keep a small stack of them around for quick fixes until I could round up one of my enchanters.

You look to be well on your way to becoming a fine bear, Dave. Happy face tanking!

  17. @ Bear: Thanks for the reply, good point about the enchants then. Icewalker is SUPER cheap and useful for tanks also as an alternative, but yeah 16 agi is good for starting out.

  18. Great list. Looking forward to the next portion of it.

Would you consider creating stat rankings and/or a loot rank link? i know that stats change on current gear but it would be great if we had a couple links. Perhaps something like a “New to 80” ranking, a “Starting Raiding TOC” link and a “Ready for ICC” link. I know it would help me looking at gear. I have a listing now I borrowed from somewhere but I would love your take on it.

  19. BBB – you mention some unbuffed starting stats of 45k health and 45% dodge and I honestly wonder “how?” I’ve got, imo, fairly respectable gear. I’m running epic gems, mostly stamina, unless it’s a red slot and the stat bonus is agi. My lowest ilevel is 213 (signet of impreg fortress and cloak of shadowed sun). I’ve 2t9, some 245’s, and I’m not even CLOSE to that. 34k, 41.88% with both dodge trinkets, or 38.4k and 38.67% dodge. Further, while I’m hit capped (319) I’m FAR from expertise capped (184 rating). Exactly what raiding gear are you looking at that have a bear ready to enter ICC at the levels you suggest?

  20. BBB,

AWESOME JOB! I wish more people would make lists like these (rather than JUST the BIS items). You identified your audience well. I have a few quick questions which I’m sure other fresh 80 (or any non top tier raiding) Bear tanks probably are curious about as well.

*At what point is my HP “good enough” for Heroics to the point i can start worrying more about Agility?
    – 3.5K for General Herocs?
    – 4K for ToC+?
*I know this partially depends on your current gear, but what would be the priority Frost/Triumph Badge items? Assuming you’re not raiding. a.k.a. what gives you the most “Bang for your buck?
    – Use Frost on the cheaper items first? (Idol,Cloak, ring,Gloves, Shoulders)
*What weapon enchant should i go with? It seems like there is no real good tanking enchant for Druids.
*Are there any good Druid Tank Rep items? (other than the blue staff/mace?)
*Does +Armor on Rings/Trinkets/weapon get multiplied by our bear form?
*Do Gems/Enchants get multiplied by our bear form?
*What Major (and minor if they apply) Glyphs should we be using for Tanking?

Also, here’s a few tips that I’ve picked up for gear upgrading Druid tank.

*A good alternative to major enchants is a Heavy Borean Leather Patch (+18 Stam)
*Macros are your friend! I added Maul to just about every ability LOL (Awesome combined with Swipe)
*Just because the LFG tool put you there, doesn’t mean you should be there. It through me into H. FoS with less than 3K HP unbuffed. We made it though, but only because the healer was awesome.

Anyways… you did an amazing job, you deserve a BIG Bear Pat on the Back. Expect to see many new readers in the upcoming weeks.

    DPS Queue = 10-15 min.
    Healer Queue = 5-8 min.
    Tank Queue = 0.00000001 – 0.01 Seconds

I’m duel spec’d Resto/Feral so i use to queue for all 3. Have yet to be taken as anything but a Tank. I don’t even bother putting a check mark under the other two anymore…

  21. Thanks BBB. Me and a buddy just dinged 80 recently and are aspiring bears. Thanks to the new LFG and the expediency of triumph collection, I have almost completed my bear set (just need rings/trinket/idol.) I plan to keep working the LFG and build a tree set for off spec. Do you know anyone who might be putting together a similar list for trees. I have a basic understanding of what I need, but knowing what is better, x or y, in starter gear would be helpful. Thanks again for the lists!

  22. Thanks a lot for the list! It’s greatly appreciated! 🙂

    I have the same question as Ateve had some comments ago though;

What is your take on the 4t9? Is it worth going with the 4 232 pieces and one 245, or grab both 245 shoulders/head and not worry about the set bonus.

    Thanks in advance! 🙂

  23. Hey Triple B, just wanted to say thanks. I raid every week, and am working on Ice Crown 10 currently, and yet this list will come in VERY handy for me. For example, I’m sporting mostly 245 and 232 stuff, yet still have the Platinum Mesh Cloak. Nice to know what I can get with badges since I’ve been really unlucky with drops to replace that item. Super list. I, along with so many others really appreciate all the work you put into things like this! You the man.

I’ll also be sharing it with a buddy of mine that is an aspiring feral tank himself.

  24. Quaras, I’m working on it for part 2. Certainly this week, preferrably tomorrow.

Sangi, honestly I don’t know where people in the raids are finding a sweet starting spot for bear tank stats in Icecrown, because so much has to do with the group composition, main versus off tank, healer types and response speed, duration of fight, etc. At this point, I’m thinking that 30k+ armor, 45k health unbuffed, and 45% Dodge with full hit rating and expertise are probably good starting stats. STARTING, not “I’m good to go”. The crit chance is a difficult value to quantify, though, because it has so much variable effect on our bubble proc. If someone with what you truly think of as a well balanced starting group has more insight as to where you are meeting success in bear tanking Icecrown, by all means please chime in.

Kaethir, as I said to another poster, the recommended enchants are fairly decent bang for the buck choices. If you are replacing gear as you climb the chart, but you’re not at the top of your goal yet, I think the Super Stats is a bit pricy. Well, it is for me.

On the other hand, once I buy a piece of Tier 9, I’m having no problem dropping a couple epic gems and a top enchant on it. I’m fixing on keeping it for a while.

I agree, the cloaks from Frost emblems are looking like some of the most solid direct upgrades. Rings and necklaces and trinkets can be found elsewhere, but a good cloak is hard to find.

Jay, I tried to start with gear you could have waiting for you from crafting at 80, and then work your way up from there. Please do not think that the bottom of the list items represent a “minimum gear to play” level. You could actually successfully tank Heroic Nexus or Utgardt Keep with worse, with a reasonable healer and DPS, depending on your aggro holding skills. If you actually start with regular blue dungeon drops that would be lower, you could do it. But why bother, when you can go ahead and buy those items available from a crafting friend, or the ones you can get that are trash drops (and are becoming increasingly cheaper on the AH) and kick into gear with a solid starter set? Run Violet Hold, Nexus, Drak’theron Keep, and Utgardt Keep, all of which I think of as new tank friendly, and use the emblems of triumph to finance your Tier improvements right out of the gate. Get a real good healer in your group of friends, and your only real limitation is the skill you develop in obtaining and holding group aggro.

Amparo… sorry, i must have missed that one. I’m sure it actually ranks quite highly, the same as the others, based on the armor value and nice Stamina. Not a balanced item overall, but high Stam and armor goes a long way to making a strong piece for us.

  25. Hi there BBB,

Thanks for another great gear list! One quick question: I notice Relentless items listed in a lot of slots, but not the legs. Looking at the Relentless legs they actually look quite good to me; is there something I’m missing about the stats that makes them less valuable?

Thank you again, I always find your gear lists very helpful.

  26. Hi BBB,

Fantastic list. As a level 77 Bear Tank fast approaching end game, I’ve been scouring the internet, trying to get an idea of what gear I should be looking for. It is difficult for a first time player to evaluate potential gear when we have no idea what we’re about to face. Your list is a big help.

One question I have is whether it is worth investing in something like the Eviscerator set when I hit 78? The stamina bonus is nice, but I wonder if I’m not better off saving the gold and sticking with drops from regular Litch King dungeons. Is it reasonable to expect that drops from regular dungeons will prepare me for heroics? Or would good BoE crafted gear be a nice way to ease into heroics?

Thanks again for a great post.

  27. I tried to post this yesterday but it apparently got flagged as spam…

Is there a reason you have Super Stats (+8 all stats) listed for the chest instead of Powerful Stats (+10 all stats) for enchant?

Also, what about the +22 stamina enchant to the feet vs. the +16 Agi one listed?

  28. I wanted to tank again and I felt like so much confused between all my healing gears, random feral and my moonkin set for emergencies, this list is really nice to have a start with!. Im gona get all the things possible, and just think in an upgrade once Im able to tank at least 10 men. Thanks.

  29. Hey, wanted to say thanks a tonne for the awesome list. Most sites list only the BiS gear, or the BoE Blue gear for pre-raid bears. The breadth of your list is excellent!

I just came back to the game this week after a couple of months out of action. Coming from a non-hardcore, mostly casual 10man raiding perspective, what would you recommend as the stats to gem/enchant for? I guess that ties directly into the real question, what would you say are acceptable stats for a beartank going into say Heroic Halls of Reflection, or 10man IC?

  30. Fantastic post and dovetails a lot with what I am trying to build toward as I gear up from basic 200 iLevel gear. I did have a few questions:

    1. Where would you rank the Furious Gladiator’s Belt of Triumph? I thought it might be a touch better than the new Flayed drop, but wasnt really sure where I would rank it.
    2. From the list, it seems like the best way to gear up as a casual with limited Frost emblems budget is the Sentinel’s Winter Cloak — cheaper than the Lasherweave stuff and seems to have a lot of bang for the buck.
    3. Would you consider a follow on post for weapons, trinkets and rings?

Thanks again for helping those of us out there who love bear tanking but arent yet in the big leagues.

  31. Lazaros, I can’t access Wowhead from work, but I will say from the Moose Ear comment that you’re probably wondering why the Onyxia hats ain’t on the list.

The reason is that I don’t have any actual raid drops on the list. None.

Yes, it does make for a list that is less useful for raiders. But this list IS useful for folks that want to know how far they can get from 5 mans and casual play.

What I hope is that a blogger that actively raids and is known for smart posts, such as Unbearably Hot, will take the time to talk about the raiding benefits of some of the new drops in ToC and Icecrown Citadel.

In the meantime… there are certainly enough pretties here to keep a heroic runnin’ bear busy for a few weeks. 🙂

  32. What is your take on the 4t9? Is it worth going with the 4 232 pieces and one 245, or grab both 245 shoulders/head and not worry about the set bonus.

  33. Pete (the For the Herd variety), I’ll be more than happy to add more options for enchants if people really want them. Heck, I’ll even add the best Crafter-only buffs, too.

These aren’t supposed to be the bestest enchants, necessarily, but they are the most generally useful for a reasonable cost for the new Bear starting out, which is what this list is for.

If I begin to present things in terms of what is the best, then really I should include raiding gear as well.

I prefer to think of the lists I do as springboards to launch new Bears into the tanking stratosphere… where they can claw the rest of the way on their own.

But sure, I’ll be happy to add Tuskarr’s to the list when I get home later, Pete.

  34. I’m constantly suprised you keep going with the agility enchant to boots instead of Tuskarr’s vitality. You’re sacrificing a very small amount of stat’s for 8% speed. You can make up the stats with other gear, enchants, gems, pots, et cetera but you can NOT make up that speed boost anywhere. I don’t know, maybe it’s just the raider in my speaking but I insist upon it for my guild, with the exception for classes with equivalent or better speed baked into their best specs, such as kitties.

  35. Nicely layed out post BBB thanks a lot.

I would of thought that the tier 10 gear would justify better gear enchants than the ones you are listing though. For instance you suggest enchanting the chest with with the Super Stats enchant but wouldn’t the Powerfull stats be a better investment? Abyss shards are 2 a penny nowadays so the cost isn’t prohibitive.
